Spring Break Must Reads – Day 2

7 books in 7 days….Spring Break Must Reads!

Day 1 – Her Highland Champion by Alexa Bourne

Day 2 takes us to a different genre. Moonlight on the Nantahala by Micheal Rivers is a paranormal fiction with a hint of thriller, a hint of romance and a full bodied story with rich characters..  I said I would direct you to lesser known authors who weave fascinating tales. Today’s novel is no exception, although Mr. Rivers has been sharing his talent with readers for quite some time.

It’s a love story. A ghost story. A story of salvation and renewal. A timeless tale that weaves slowly through your heart, capturing your emotions with its beauty. A novel written with such eloquence that shortly after most readers turn the final page, they find themselves searching for other titles by this masterful writer.

Moonlight tells the story of Edward Caulfield, an elderly man who has lived in the shadow of a lost love for most of his life. Enter a troubled young woman named Lena, add a dash of  ghostly conversation, and Edward forms an unlikely friendship that allows him to experience a different kind of love. During regular visits, we learn of the events and sorrow that brought each of  them to the same spot, and the healing that helps each to move on to the next phase. It reminds me of an old adage, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

Moonlight on the Nantahala wraps around you like a slow moving river, providing the motion to carry you downstream but allowing enough time to savor the trip. This is the second novel I’ve read by Micheal Rivers. I suspect it will not be my last.

Spring Break Must Reads – Day One

It’s Spring Break. A great time to catch a few rays while catching up on some great books.

I’m posting a suggestion for  eBook reads each day during the next week. My choices are NOT from the best sellers list. Everyone knows those titles and authors. Nope, my list comes from the lower ranks.  There are wonderful gems of hidden talent in the digital world if you just dig for them. You may not agree with my selections but I encourage you to give them a try.  We each have expectations of what we want in novel and it’s virtually impossible to satisfy everyone. Trust me . . . as an author, I have first hand knowledge of this phenomena.

So to begin my first day of Spring Break Must Reads, I’m offering a fresh out of the gate debut author. Alexa Bourne has crafted a wonderful, intriguing and thoroughly saucy novella called Her Highland Champion. This author is well-travelled and used her first hand knowledge of Scotland to create a descriptive background that rivals the reader’s fascination with the sexy alpha hero, Malcom Fraser. Ms. Bourne has a talent for building sexual tension in the most simplistic scenarios. I’ve licked my lips so many times, I was forced to purchase a new tube of ChapStick.

Okay, I admit I’m a sucker for amnesia plots. When Heather Winchester washes up on the shores of Loch Finnan, half-frozen and lacking a memory, she’s rescued from more than a bad case of hypothermia. Malcom Fraser, a retired bodyguard with secrets of his own, charges into her life and heart with all the passion and desire of a  Highland laird from history. The connection between the main characters is immediate and intense. Add a dash of suspense in a delightfully twisted sub-plot, another area of expertise in which Ms. Bourne excels, and you’ve got a riveting story that keeps you turning pages to the end.

I finished this quick read with a mixture of satisfaction and disappointment.  Disappointment because I wanted more!  And there is more to come.  Her Highland Champion is the first in a wonderful series developed around these hunks of burnin’ love bodyguards i.e. IPN Honor Guards.

This is a perfect read for a poolside diversion. Once you’ve finished, go take a dip in the cool waters. You’ll need it!

Lucky 7 Meme – Tag, I’m It!

Karen Gerard must have known what was lurking on my “page 7″ when she tagged me in this game. Whoa! Still, in the heart of fun, I’m participating and tagging 7 other authors to do the same.

The rules are:

1. Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next seven lines as they are – no cheating
4. Tag 7 other authors (Done on Facebook)

Here’s my seven lines from newly released paranormal, “The Gatekeeper”.

I wanted this guy . . . bad. As much as I hated to admit it, the demon had stirred up a sexual itch that needed to be scratched. Cowboy definitely had the equipment to do it.

I like sex, although I’m pretty picky about whose cock gets inside me. But a one night stand with this hunky cowboy was exactly the distraction I needed. No strings. No expectations. No emotional intimacy. And since he wasn’t from here, I wouldn’t have to make up an excuse tomorrow morning about why I couldn’t see him again.

FREE…..FREE…..

In honor of my recently acquired FREEDOM from the day job, I’m offering one of my books, Blood Storm, as a free download on Amazon Friday, March 23 through Saturday March 24. Be sure to stop by and take advantage of this highly acclaimed romantic suspense. Here’s the link, but remember…it doesn’t start until Friday!

Cliff Diving Into My Future

I’ve always viewed endings in the same light as beginnings. When a situation/relationship fades, another starts anew. You can’t have one without the other. That’s life. It’s impossible to avoid so we should embrace the process. Sometimes easier said than done, especially when emotions accompany the transition.

Yesterday was my last day as a paid employee. Emotions are running rampant right now – elation, relief, excitement, nervousness, fear. It’s like cliff jumping at the lake. Running toward the rocky ledge, jumping with the exhilaration of flying through air, realizing you’re falling, holding your nose and clamping your lips together as you hit the water with a smack. Slicing into the black depths until your descent begins to slow and you look up at the bright ripples overhead. Kicking, swimming, moving toward the light, your lungs screaming for air.

I’ve jumped boldly into the future, moving from a secured income to one based solely on my own efforts. Kinda like a commission based job, except there’s no “draw”. I think I’m in the freefall stage right now. There’s no going back, the exhilartion is fading and I’m plummeting toward a watery abyss. No guts, no glory. That’s what I keep telling myself.

I’m not good with farewells. It was hard leaving a job where I’ve excelled and maintained a standard of excellence for the past year. Saying goodbye to friends and associates who have become like family. People bond for various reasons. Once that bond is broken or removed, many relationships don’t survive. All the promises of calling, meeting for lunch, and keeping in touch fell under a shroud of regret. It probably won’t happen. I’ve left their world and the elements that drew us together are no longer in place.

I’ll miss most of my co-workers. Not the stress. Not the chaotic changes and missteps by management that kept our entire department in flux. Not the overload of work on too few people. Not the nepotisim that created an unfair burden of responsibility on others. And not the health issues I’ve incurred over the past few months as my job went from bliss to hell.

Nope, I won’t miss that.

So here’s to a new beginning. I now have time to focus on my writing. Promoting my existing books. Creating new ones. Keeping up with my blog. Connecting with my fans. Re-acquainting myself with family. Losing the twenty pounds I gained in the past year at my job. Enjoying more physical exercise and hopefully a healthier lifestyle.

It took a huge leap of faith to choose an unknown path over one less pleasant but familiar. But I’m an adventurer. I’ve done this before. Sometimes with glorious results. Sometimes not. I have no idea what lies ahead but I’m excited to get started.

I just need one more glance over my shoulder at what I left behind . . . one last goodbye. And on I go.

Steven Spielberg. We’re Not So Different

Like millions of other viewers, I watched the Academy Awards. Admittedly, my interest focused more on the celebrities strolling the red carpet than who won the gold statue but that’s irrelevant. I watched. I listened to acceptance speeches. I scanned the crowd for expressions of delight and/or disappointment. For one night, I became an unrepentant voyeur.

Until an award recipient uttered a few sentences that resonated so loudly within me, I’m still thinking about them a week later. My apologies to the person responsible for this blog topic. I do not remember your name or even what category you won. I do remember you were male and responsible for the “guts” of the film. A director, perhaps?

What you said mirrored perfectly with what I was feeling that night about my writing. I’ll have to paraphrase, and blend a bit of my own experiences with the emotions you evoked.  You said most people go to the movies to be entertained. They have no idea of the struggles behind the scene, putting the film together, the endless nights of angst before the release date where you wonder if you hit the mark or failed miserably. They can’t possibly know how the project consumed your life, interrupted your relationships and riddled your self-confidence with doubt.

Movie goers, the fans, only know if they like it or not. And what you endured to produce the film is secondary. So an achievement of recognition is even sweeter when one considers the sacrifices made to get it there.

Authors are like that. We emote, we wail, we pace the room – mentally revising each chapter, each sentence until the finished manuscript is published. We then begin the nervous process of watching the numbers and rankings, awaiting judgment by the readers. Our fans. Our detractors. Our judge and jury.

They don’t care about our emotional investment, the hours of writing and re-writing, the sleepless nights plotting a scene because our brains simply would not shut off. They want entertainment. And we either pass or fail. It’s that simple.

Films and novels are blood sucking leeches. They drain their creators of every ounce of strength, pride and sanity. They test our endurance. They scoff at our tears. Ridicule our efforts and force us to try harder. Again and again, until we get it right. Or in some cases, wrong. Films and novels are cruel, unforgiving taskmasters. Sometimes fans are, too.

And then sometimes, they lift us up and carry us off the field like a hero, chanting our name, allowing us a moment of glory to soak up like a sponge. A memory that will live on and on long after the sales deteriorate.

Steven Spielberg:  As a jockey of words and a creative soul, I feel the same pain. And I embrace the same joy. We’re both held accountable by the masses for our projects.  I guess deep inside, we’re not so different.
