REVIEW:

I Heard Your Voice by Tanith Davenport is a fast moving novella that ends before you’re ready – but will stay in your memory for a long time. The characters are delightful with vivid details of their appearance and mannerisms described so perfectly that I could close my eyes and visualize each person.

While this is a short novella, it’s packed full of action, angst and emotional conflict. I love ghost stories and I Heard Your Voice might very well have earned a place at the top of “My Favorites” list. It has enough human drama to transcend the spirit world while adding believability to the plot.

The story revolves around Tamar Steele, a young woman working for a financially strapped paranormal investigation team. She also serves as assistant to their egotistical medium, Reed James. Reed practices a pre-investigation ritual which involves a “quickie” in the back of Tamar’s car. Their romance has long since faded and she only tolerates his actions because the team can’t afford another medium.

Her investigative team member, Jason, is falling in love with her. He hates what is going on but refuses to reveal his feelings – until one night when Tamar starts singing during an investigation and attracts a very sexy spirit who decides to play matchmaker. But only after teaching Tamar a thing or two along the way.

The only complaint I have has nothing to do with the writing. The cover art in no way offers a visual representation of the story, which could affect readers who “judge a book by its cover”.

I Heard Your Voice is a fun, sweet, romantic tale filled with lots of hot sex. This is my kind of erotica . . . a story that could stand on its own without the sex. But thank goodness Tanith Davenport decided to leave those wonderful passionate scenes in tact because they’re much too delicious to lose!

EXCERPT:

The car park was deserted, shadowy. They crossed to the left-hand corner, not speaking, not touching. Tamar unbuttoned her coat as they walked and let it hang open as she unfastened her jeans. As she unlocked the door, she heard a rustle behind her, but didn’t turn round. That would be Reed retrieving a condom.

Opening the rear door, she threw her coat into the footwell before climbing inside on all fours. The seat bounced beneath her as Reed crawled in behind her—then the car rocked slightly with the slam of the door.

She felt his hands tug at her waistband, taking her knickers with it, then his warm weight was on her back and her thighs parted automatically as she felt him enter her on the first thrust.

“Oh yeah,” Reed breathed in her ear. “So tight.”

One of his hands slid under her sweater, pushing her bra upwards to caress her bare breast. Tamar gasped as his thumb ran over one pebbled nipple, the sensation sparking something inside her. She ran her hand down her body to the fork of her thighs, already wet, and toyed with her soft folds.

Reed groaned, his movements quickening, his hips crashing against hers with every thrust. Clutching at the seat, Tamar pressed her fingers to her clit, moaning, her pleasure beginning to mount. She dropped her head onto her arm, muffling her cries in her sleeve as her body jolted under Reed’s, his voice echoing inside the car, oh God and yes and fuck and she was so close, so fucking close—tingling, aching, needing, yes

“Oh!” Reed gasped and tightened his arms around her, crushing her to him. Tamar arched and groaned, grinding out her own orgasm against her hand.

For a second they were still, both trembling with aftershocks.

Then Reed let Tamar drop heavily onto the seat, rolling himself into a seated position. Tamar shifted onto her side and watched him peel off the condom—unceremoniously dropping it onto the floor – and swiftly re-fasten his jeans before closing his eyes and touching his index fingers to his temples.

“Yes. Oh, I am on fire tonight.” He raised a fist in the air in triumph. “Go me!”

Then, without another look or word, he opened the car door and was gone, slamming it behind him with a force that rocked the chassis.

Rolling onto her back, Tamar pulled up her knickers and jeans. She cast a glance of distaste at the leaking condom and climbed out of the car, wincing slightly as another stab of pain wracked her body. Reed’s ritual had done her back no favors.

“Playing Darlene” – Not Your Average Fantasy

Most kids grow up playing make believe. Sometimes it carries into adulthood. Go to any Renaissance Faire and tell me those participants are not having fun. But when fantasy borders sexual deviance, it suddenly becomes a topic that’s not spoken about in “polite” company, and practiced in dark dungeons.

“Playing Darlene” is a true story about one woman’s secret life as a Dominatrix while working as a respected school teacher.

I agreed to review “Playing Darlene” out of morbid curiosity. I confess I was prepared for a book filled with explicit details of sick, perverted actions. What I found, however, was a smartly written story about a woman’s ability to overcome an abusive childhood and carve out an unconventional future doing something she enjoys.

“Darlene” had it rough growing up. From the outside, it looked as if her life was straight out of “Leave It To Beaver” but past those closed doors was a dysfunctional family. Her father was rarely home, her mother was weak and controlled by Darlene’s older brother – an adolescent who enjoyed terrorizing his sister.  What kept Darlene going was her love of performing. She thrived under the spotlight and found opportunities to perform in dance, plays and school events even as her brother took pride in destroying her happiness.

Darlene was a sponge for learning through college and beyond, but once she felt like she’d conquered the tasks, she grew bored and sought out something new. She wasn’t a “desk” person, preferring active positions where she could mingle with people. She soon combined her love of dance with the lucrative art of stripping. From there, she began to explore the fantasy world of S&M, Bondage, Slavery and Domination. While some might question her decision, I prefer to remain non-judgmental. Darlene found fantasy role-playing an exciting outlet for her desire to perform.

An interesting element in “Playing Darlene” is the case histories of clients layered throughout the book. I found it fascinating to enter this world via the written word, and walked away with a better understanding of how Dominatrix are caring for the special needs of their elite clientele. Very often, the client sends a description of exactly how they want their fantasy to play out, even including props and costumes. It’s usually planned down to the smallest detail. Darlene never had sex with her clients, although they were allowed to pleasure themselves. Many didn’t because it was about a different experience.

You won’t find explicit sex scenes in “Playing Darlene”. There’s plenty of erotic fiction out there with titillating details. Even though the subject matter might prove unsettling to some readers. In my opinion, this is a great human interest story about a courageous woman who took lemons and made lemonade. Darlene lives her life with honesty and pride. She is as comfortable teaching students in the public school system as she is “playing” with customers in the dungeon.

She lived her fantasy dream for 18 years and is still enjoying life. And while her dream might be vastly different from most people, I admire her ability to juggle the light with the dark without losing balance.

Book Description:

In this eye-opening true story, one woman recounts the double life she led working in two very different professions…one revered and the other reviled. Darlene spent over twenty years being thought of as a well-mannered teacher in a Southern California public school district, but her colleagues and students would have never imagined that for eighteen of those years she also worked as a professional dominatrix in a dungeon. “

Playing Darlene” lets the reader take a peek into the mysterious lives of professionals in the sex industry and some of the jaw-dropping encounters she had with the thousands of clients whose fantasies she helped come true. With everything from roleplaying a shopaholic wife being spanked by her husband to wrapping up a muscular cross-dressing client in plastic and watching him wiggle, Darlene helped men realize their most secret desires…while she wasn’t grading school papers on her breaks.

Darlene’s true stories of balancing her two different personas are frequently shocking, at times hilarious, and occasionally touching, but at the heart of the story is a woman on a personal journey not only to reconcile with her past, but also to discover the full potential of her own sexuality.

About the Author:

Darlene was born in Hollywood, California, and grew up in Pasadena, a quiet suburb near Los Angeles. She received a BA in German from California State University, Los Angeles. For several years she worked in television and film. Credits include General Hospital, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and the female lead in the film Monstrosity in which she played a spaced-out punk rocker. She even photo-doubled for Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun and Corey Feldman in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (when they were 14 and 12 respec- tively). For the past 20 years, she has been a public school teacher in Los Angeles County. She currently lives in the San Fernando Valley, where she can be found indulging in her favorite hobby, ballroom and country-western dancing. Her next book is scheduled to be released in early 2013.

Hex and the Single Witch – A Thriller To Sink Your Teeth Into

No one told me to have a glass of ice water at my side while reading Hex and the Single Witch. By the time I realized how much heat this book generates, I was too engrossed to put it down and too busy turning pages to go to the kitchen.

Passion, desire and hot, steamy sex are a big part of this book but there’s so much more. The sign of good Erotica is removing the sex and seeing if you still have a story, otherwise it’s just porn.  Hex and the Single Witch delivers a great story. This paranormal thriller will keep you guessing on a couple of levels and leave you anxiously awaiting the next release.

Book One of the Vehicle City Vampires series introduces us to Anwyn Rose, a young witch whose only real power is the ability to read minds with a touch. She’s a detective on the Flint, Michigan’s P.I.T. crew (Preternatural Investigation Team) who uses her special gifts to see the last thoughts of murder victims and thus, identify their killer. She’s also liaison to the “Others”, supernaturals who run the town.

When a Vampire serial killer hits Flint and starts draining the blood from young women, Anwyn is called upon to use her gift. The crafty villain blocks her power of “knowing” and she is unable to see his face. It doesn’t stop her from experiencing the women’s deaths, however . . . an intensely orgasmic experience that leaves her horny as hell.

Her sexy partner, Mike Malone, would love to take care of her needs and he’s definitely built for the job but she lusts after Galen, a vampire with old world values who doesn’t trust himself not to drain Anwyn during sex. Abstinence is not what she wants.  Driven by urgings too strong to ignore, Anwyn discovers someone has put her under a spell. And that’s only the beginning.

Navigating a love triangle that grows more complicated by the minute is the least of her worries as she struggles to find the murderous vampire and save Galen from execution.

Hex and the Single Witch is an interesting contemporary thriller filled with magick, mystery and mayhem. Ms. Rhoads has done an excellent job of merging sex, romance and suspense in a new world setting while keeping the characters believable.

You’re gonna like this book!

What you’ll equally enjoy is the great contest that accompanies the Hex and the Single Witch book tour.

WINNERS! And more news . . .

Congratulations to the two winners who entered my contest at The Romance Reviews! Gwen H. and Caroline T. received copies of my Urban Paranormal, The GATEKEEPER, from the Clans of Tagus series. Speaking of which . . . the second book in the series, The WARRIOR, is scheduled for release around mid June.

Other news . . . My alter-ego, Alexis Thomas, will be releasing her first erotic novella, Nice Girls . . . DO!, next week. It’s the first in a naughty series called Dark Pleasures.

I’m in the process of tidying up another romantic suspense I wrote a few years back. Hope to have it ready for fans of Stone Cold Justice next month. It’s tentatively titled (say that 3 times real fast, tentatively titled, tentatively titled, tentatively titled) Red Hot Danger. Set in Phoenix and the stunning  red rocks of Sedona, it’s a sexy thriller about a hunky Alpha cop trying to protect a photographer who unknowingly snapped pictures of a murder. I’ll save the rest for the blurb.

Lots of good reads coming your way! Stay tuned!

Spring Break Must Reads – Day One

It’s Spring Break. A great time to catch a few rays while catching up on some great books.

I’m posting a suggestion for  eBook reads each day during the next week. My choices are NOT from the best sellers list. Everyone knows those titles and authors. Nope, my list comes from the lower ranks.  There are wonderful gems of hidden talent in the digital world if you just dig for them. You may not agree with my selections but I encourage you to give them a try.  We each have expectations of what we want in novel and it’s virtually impossible to satisfy everyone. Trust me . . . as an author, I have first hand knowledge of this phenomena.

So to begin my first day of Spring Break Must Reads, I’m offering a fresh out of the gate debut author. Alexa Bourne has crafted a wonderful, intriguing and thoroughly saucy novella called Her Highland Champion. This author is well-travelled and used her first hand knowledge of Scotland to create a descriptive background that rivals the reader’s fascination with the sexy alpha hero, Malcom Fraser. Ms. Bourne has a talent for building sexual tension in the most simplistic scenarios. I’ve licked my lips so many times, I was forced to purchase a new tube of ChapStick.

Okay, I admit I’m a sucker for amnesia plots. When Heather Winchester washes up on the shores of Loch Finnan, half-frozen and lacking a memory, she’s rescued from more than a bad case of hypothermia. Malcom Fraser, a retired bodyguard with secrets of his own, charges into her life and heart with all the passion and desire of a  Highland laird from history. The connection between the main characters is immediate and intense. Add a dash of suspense in a delightfully twisted sub-plot, another area of expertise in which Ms. Bourne excels, and you’ve got a riveting story that keeps you turning pages to the end.

I finished this quick read with a mixture of satisfaction and disappointment.  Disappointment because I wanted more!  And there is more to come.  Her Highland Champion is the first in a wonderful series developed around these hunks of burnin’ love bodyguards i.e. IPN Honor Guards.

This is a perfect read for a poolside diversion. Once you’ve finished, go take a dip in the cool waters. You’ll need it!
