MEET THE AUTHOR: Piper Shelly
I’m happy to welcome Piper Shelly, author of Her Game, His Rules, a YA paranormal romance.
Thank you so much for having me here today!
Piper, your debut novel is a haunting love story involving a young woman and an angel. In this day and age where vampires, werewolves and demons rule, why did you craft a heaven-sent hero?
Oh, I love vampires, and am working on a series about them too. But somehow, I’ve always been drawn to angels. Already in my childhood, there happened strange, very interesting things I couldn’t explain, and neither could someone else. It was a nice idea my parents planted into my mind then, that angels might be the reason for all this mystic stuff going on. I was never one to go to church, really. But I take a minute everyday to say “hi” to my guardian angel. And since in my imagination he’s quite a sexy guy, what’s better than to make him a character in my novel?
What made you decide to write for the young adult market?
I never made that decision. Originally, I wanted to write for an adult audience only, but as the story started out, I just had this teenage girl in my mind. I couldn’t help it. She wanted to be written, and I did what she said. Later, I found out that YA is a genre I quite like. One reason is, that for me the first kiss is way more important than sex. I like to build the tension to this special moment, where the reader holds his breath with you, wanting the hero to just cup the heroine’s neck, pull her closer and press his lips to hers. If in this one moment a smile creeps to the readers face, than I know I succeeded.
You’ve said you love to travel and many of those experiences wind up in some manner as part of your books. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve done and how has that transcended to your work?
Okay, my absolutely best vacation ever was a trip to London in 2009. I was there with a friend and we spent the most wonderful five days exploring the city. That was an experience I had to work into my book, no matter what. The outcome? Her Game, His Rules starts out in London’s streets, at Camden Market. That the story later moves to France is a result of a trip I made with my cousin and her family when I was 14. We traveled through the country for almost three weeks. The landscape, especially in the South, totally fascinated me.
What inspires you?
Oh, so many things. Most of all music. I can’t write a book until I found the perfect song for it. Once I have it, writing is easy. For those who’d like to know what kind of music I use for inspiration, there’s a playlist to each of my books on my website.
Other than music, I love to lie in the grass and get my inspiration from just daydreaming in the sun. The sun is actually the most important thing for me. I tend to get depressive if bad weather wears on too long, while a simple sunray can make me smile in a second.
If you weren’t an author, what would you be? And why?
A princess…in Scotland! Because I love those amazing, highland-beauty dresses. Unfortunately, you can’t wear them today any more, but I do like to go to balls or dress up for carnival.
What’s been the greatest obstacle on the road to publishing you had to overcome?
To realize how poor my first draft was and that revising the stuff wouldn’t work out. After some serious thinking, I decided to re-write the entire novel…yeah right, from scratch. The best decision I could have made!
You said you were working on a story with vampires. What type of otherworldly creature do you find the most frightening?
Frightening? Okay, definitely not vampires. They’re too sexy to be frightening. So yeah, I don’t like Zombies. They really do look ugly at times and I would hate to meet one just after dark.
And now for the fun question…..
If you found a magic stone that could transport you back in time to any era, where would you go and why?
Wow…that is a good one! And I’m sure you can just guess my answer already. I’d go back to the Highlands in the 18th or 19th century. Why? Because of the dresses… 😉
Thanks again for inviting me today. It was fun to talk to you. And as a little bonus for your readers, I thought I’d give a PDF of my novel to one lucky commenter. All I want to know from you is:
Do you believe in angels and why (or why not)?
I think it’s okay to announce the winner in a week from today. So come on, let’s hear what you think. 😉
Have a wonderful day!

She’s seventeen. She’s snarky. She’s trouble…
It wasn’t nicking an expressive watch or diamond bracelet that landed Jona Montiniere in the clutches of the police. It was just a darn sweater. After a spectacular, failed escapade, she is forced to return to a mother who spurned her. Jona is furious about the judge’s decision—until she meets her mother’s companion.
Gorgeous, provocative, and mysterious, Julian is everything her lonely heart desires. But then he awakens her mother from the dead with a simple touch.
Hunting for the truth in a strange new home, Jona unearths broken promises and bitter secrets. Soon she realizes she’ll once again lose someone she loves…unless she gives him a reason to stay. But how the hell do you keep an angel earthbound?
Did you know that this word scares me more than anything? About… Wherever you go, people want you to tell what a cool life you lead just because you’re an author. But really, there’s nothing special to say about me, except maybe that I write a little more than others normally do. I married my teenage-love, we do our best to raise our ten-year-old to a kind and caring young man, and my cat loves to sleep in my bed, forcing me to bend to the strangest positions at night, just so she can sprawl comfortably on the blanket. I like pizza. And occasionally I talk to angels, but seriously, in these times, who doesn’t…?
So all in all, I dare say I’m leading a pretty normal life.
Of course it will all change the day my book follows the act of Harry Potter, and I’ll become richer than the Queen. I swear I’ll never again clean my windows myself then. Yeah, one day, ha ha…
