What was hidden in his study? And why has Toran contacted her again after all these years? Someone is out to silence Leah – and that someone might be the man she is rapidly falling in love with… again.

Excerpt:

“Quiet!” a voice hissed, as a hand clamped over her mouth and Leah felt herself pressed against a hard, male body, muscular arms folding around her like a band of iron.

She tried to scream again and struggled, kicking back with her heels. She heard a sound of annoyance and the hand fell from her mouth for a second. She took a deep breath, ready to scream again, when a voice she recognised spoke urgently in her ear.

“Leah! Leah! It’s me!”

He let go of her, then strong hands gripped her shoulders and gave her a sharp shake. Her head snapped back and her scream was cut off. Leah stumbled backwards, staring at the man in front of her.

“Toran?”

He glanced around, then moved swiftly, taking her right arm and leading her towards the building entrance. She stumbled along beside him, trying to keep up with his long strides, as they passed through the lobby of the building and headed towards the lifts.

“What—”

“Get in,” he said tersely as the lift doors opened.

“No.” She balked. “Not until you explain what’s going on. And what the hell you thought you were doing just now, manhandling me like that.”

He glanced back the way they had come and gave her a gentle push. “I don’t have time to explain now.”

“Well, I don’t care. I want—”

GET. IN.”

The look on his face scared her. This was not the boy she used to know, but a man who could be dangerous. Very dangerous. She stepped into the lift and stood well away from him as the doors swished shut after them, and the hum of machinery told her that they were ascending. She noticed for the first time that he was wearing a baseball cap and dark glasses.

“Where are we going?” she demanded.

“To the fifteenth floor.” He took off the shades and cap, and ran a hand through his hair. “Leah, I’m sorry; this wasn’t how I planned the evening at all—”

“Oh, really? You mean you don’t always attack your dates and maul them as soon as you see them? I guess I should be honoured that I get that special privilege!” She was angry now—angry at how scared she had been, angry at his strange behaviour, maybe even angry at herself for feeling a thrill of excitement when she had been pressed up against his body. She remembered the way his chest felt, hard under her hands, and the rough thrust of his thigh against hers, and her face burned. Whatever it was she had expected to feel when she saw Toran James again, it wasn’t this raw attraction.

“Don’t be melodramatic,” he said.

“Melodramatic? Me?” Her voice rose in indignation. “You’re the one with the kidnapping act!”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just… Someone might have heard you scream and—” He broke off.

“And what?” She raised her eyebrows.

The lift pinged and the doors slid open.

“Come on,” he said, putting a hand to her elbow.

“No!” Leah pulled her arm away. “I’m not going anywhere with you until you explain. I’ve barely been in Singapore twenty-four hours and already I feel like I’m in some bad B-movie. What the hell is going on, Toran? Why did you contact me again after all these years? Why did you ask me to meet you last night?”

He said impatiently, “Because I wanted to see you, of course.”

“Don’t lie,” Leah snapped. “There’s more to it than that. I know about the yacht explosion.” She saw with satisfaction that he had gone very still. “Why didn’t you mention that when you saw me last night?”

The doors had slid shut again. Suddenly, the lift seemed a lot smaller. Leah felt a flare of panic. What was she thinking, confronting him here in this tight, airless space? She should have waited until they had gotten out, gone somewhere more public, somewhere she could get away.

She flew towards the controls, but he stepped forwards, blocking her with his body. His hand shot out and gripped her wrist. Leah felt herself pulled up against him, pressed once more against the taut, muscular length of his body. She gasped, throwing her head back, and looked up at him. The pad of his thumb brushed against the soft skin on the inside of her wrist and a shudder of awareness ran up her arm.

“I’ll explain, but not here. Not now. You have to trust me.” His green eyes burned into hers.

MY REVIEW:

Every once in a while, I read a novel that is so entrancing, so captivating that I find myself submerged in the story without realizing how much time has passed. CROSSING INTO THE MYSTIC is such a book. Ms. Koontz weaves a hypnotic web, filled with lyrical descriptions and interesting characters, drawing the reader deep into the world of Grace McKenna and wrapping them in a subtle, silky cocoon resistant to one’s will to break free . . . even if you wished for such an escape.

You won’t.

Grace McKenna is a sixteen year old thrust into maturity by circumstance, not by choice. After her mother and sister are killed in an automobile accident, Grace is sent to live with her aunt in Boston . . . a selfish, self-serving eccentric who lives off Grace’s inheritance. When Grace is willed her step-father’s ancestral home with the stipulation she must live there for three months before selling the property, her aunt is on board with shipping poor Grace to West Virginia alone. Grace is eager to leave her aunt’s clutches, so perhaps it’s a win-win situation . . . in the beginning.

Shortly after her arrival, Grace discovers the old, dilapidated mansion is haunted by a Civil War soldier, William Kavanaugh, who entreats her help in unraveling the mystery behind his death one hundred and fifty years ago. Her first reaction is a mixture of curiosity and fear but when Will saves her from two unscrupulous vandals, she becomes his devoted assistant.

Along the way, she meets an assortment of small town residents who add color, humor and complexity to the story. Clay Baxter adds a little more . . . even though he  is engaged, the hunky twenty year old is inexplicably drawn to the independent young woman with emotional walls ten feet tall. They form an alliance, one that leads to strong  feelings on both sides.

As they attempt to solve the mysterious circumstances behind Will’s death, Grace finds herself torn between two realms, two men and struggling to find her place in an adult world.

Honestly, the only negative thing I can say about this book focuses on Grace’s age. I know there are emancipated young people who live on their own at sixteen but I think I would have enjoyed her emotional journey more if she had been a bit older. Other than that, this is a wonderfully written novel that speaks to readers on so many levels. CROSSING INTO THE MYSTIC should be on everyone’s To Be Read list! I rate it 4.5 stars.

Book Description:

Haunted. Haunting. Redeemed.

When Lisa Harbinger takes a job as nanny to a prestigious Australian family, she gets more than she bargained for: two spoilt children, vengeful ghosts, a long-unsolved mystery and a blazing passion she and her enigmatic boss are unable to deny.

Excerpt:

“He fell in love with someone else,” Richard repeated thoughtfully. “Was she a friend of yours?”

It must be time to confess. What he would think of me after that, I didn’t dare consider. “Actually, she was a he. Simon fell in love with Robert and finally admitted he was gay.”

Richard’s eyebrows shot up. “Married to someone as lovely and intelligent as you? That’s almost impossible to believe.”

Lovely? Intelligent? Not knowing how to respond to these compliments I said quickly, “I think Simon always knew he was gay. Even when he married me, he was just in denial. I was too dumb to wake up to it.”

“When you did realise, how did it make you feel?”

“Angry. Miserable. Then totally stupid,” I answered. “There were so many hints, but I kept on ignoring them.” Then I dared to venture, as the atmosphere between us was definitely pulsing, “He was never interested in sex.”

His face blank, Richard turned to the next page of the book we were sharing, then another. In the pause I heard an owl hoot and the wind rustle a branch against the window.

At last he put down the book. “Never interested in sex. That mean you’re not? Let’s find out.” With this, he placed one arm around my waist and with the other hand tilted my head so I faced him. Then he carefully and delicately placed his mouth over mine.

Book Description:

FOUR WILDE BROTHERS…ONE WILDE COUNTRY BAND

WILDE RIDERS is the first novel in a spicy new contemporary romance series about four sexy brothers, their small-town bar and their local country band. WILDE RIDERS can be read as a STAND ALONE NOVEL or as part of the SERIES.

Cooper Wilde spent his entire adolescence counting the days until he could escape rural northwest New Jersey. Now at 26, he can’t believe he’s coming back. But his late father’s bar, Haymakers, is in financial trouble and his older brother, Jake, has asked for Cooper’s help.

Riley Smith, 25, is fresh out of her Ivy League MBA program and wants to make an impression on her employer, H & C Bank. Her first solo assignment is a fraud investigation on a business loan they made to Haymakers.

Even though Old Town is less than 90 minutes from New York City, Riley feels like she’s stepped into another world in this remote, one-bar town. Riley can’t wait to do her business and get back to the city as quickly as her sports car will take her…until she meets Cooper Wilde. He’s not like the other guys in this rural town and Riley feels inexplicably attracted to him.

Excerpt:

I can’t believe I have to make a trip to New Jersey. And rural New Jersey to boot. Would someone just shoot me now and put me out of my misery?

“Riley!” I hear a voice yell from behind me. It’s a voice I recognize and don’t really want to deal with right now. I contemplate speeding up my pace but I have a feeling Patti will just quicken her stride to catch up to me so what’s the point?

Patti is almost breathless when she finally manages to grab my elbow. “Where are you going so fast?”

I can’t believe she’s been running in Jimmy Choos and a business suit. Patti is 5 feet 9 inches and towers over me. She probably could have been a model with her gorgeous blond hair and flawless complexion. I’m petite with dark hair and eyes to match. We’re almost complete opposites in the looks department. And probably every other department if the truth be told.

“New Jersey.” I spit. I know I sound bitter but I can hardly contain my contempt for the state. Well, maybe not the entire state. I’ll give Atlantic City a pass but only because you can get drunk and gamble and it doesn’t require a plane flight like Las Vegas.

Patti and I work together at H & C Bank but we’ve known each other for years. We were college roommates. I don’t have siblings so Patti is the closest thing I’ve ever had to a sister.

Patti frowns. “Why are you going to Jersey?” The way she says Jersey makes it sounds like I’m going to garbage dump or a toxic waste site. Those options might be a few steps up from a trip to rural New Jersey.

“I have to conduct a fraud investigation on a business loan. It shouldn’t take very long.” Oh, God, I hope it doesn’t. “I plan to be back tonight.”

Patti smiles. “Good because we’ve got a double date.”

“With who?” I sigh. Patti manages to fix me up with worst guys in the city. I don’t know how she does it. They’re all Wall Street wannabes and the only things they talk about are their 6 Series BWMs and the first million they’re going to make before they turn thirty. Most of them are so impressed with themselves they’re actually offended that I don’t want to jump into bed with them on the first date.

“These guys are different,” she says.

Patti always says they’re different and they never are. They’re the same guys over and over again just in different suits and shoes.

“No,” I state adamantly. “I’m not going out with one more Wall Street wannabe. Forget it.”

“Please,” Patti begs. She’s got a look in her eye that says she’s not going to stop until I agree to go.

“Fine,” I say. “But if the guy drops one hint about his six figure salary or the fantastic view from his brand new apartment, I’m out of there. And I get to throw a drink in his lap if he mentions making his first million before thirty. Got it?”

“I don’t know why stuff like that upsets you so much. You have an MBA from Columbia and you just bought your first BMW.”

“And I’m well on my way to making my first million. But I don’t throw it in people’s faces when I first meet them. I want to know who the guy really is—what makes him tick. I don’t want to hear his impressive resume and a list of everything he owns.”

Patti shrugs. “I just want to know if a guy’s good in bed. But I usually don’t find that out until after dinner. I don’t care what we talk about in between.”

I shake my head. “You’re like a guy trapped in a gorgeous girl’s body.”

She laughs. “So I’ve been told.”

“Is the double date really that important to you?”

She looks at me like I’m from another planet. “I haven’t gotten laid in almost two weeks. I’d say it’s nearing emergency level.”

I don’t want to tell her that it’s been months since I’ve been with someone. Six months to be exact.

“Fine, I’ll try to get back to the city as fast as I can.”

She grins. “That’s why you’re my best friend.”

“I’m your only friend,” I correct.

“Best. Only. Semantics. I’ll see you tonight.”

Review: Through His Eyes by Deborah Camp

Through His Eyes Banner 851 x 315

Review:

Deborah Camp has done it again . . . added another fascinating book to her long list of entertaining reads. THROUGH HIS EYES is a romantic suspense chock full of both . . . steamy, titillating romance and edge of your seat suspense.

I loved the paranormal twist with psychics Trudy Tucker and Levi Wolfe. Trudy has the ability to see and feel the horrific acts committed by murderers. Levi can speak to the victims, chronicling the last hours, even minutes, of their life. They team up to end the gruesome spree of a serial killer in the Florida Keys. Along the way, they realize their connection is much more than shared psychic abilities as their hearts and bodies entwine as tightly as their minds.

Some of the scenes viewed by Trudy are graphic. I typically don’t like extreme violence but these scenes are necessary to fully translate the villain’s evil intentions. While at times intense, the balance is restored with witty banter and sexy encounters between Levi and Trudy.

THROUGH HIS EYES is a well written thriller with a healthy dose of romance. It should be on the “must read” list of every romantic suspense reader but more than that, anyone who enjoys a good crime novel or action thriller will definitely want to consider this novel for their library. At 100k words, it’s lengthier than most formula books of this genre but is filled with meat, not fluff. A very good read!

Book Description:

Two psychics – one serial killer.

Someone is stalking women and murdering them in Key West.

Levi Wolfe and Trudy Tucker join forces to help identify the murderer and stop him. Levi can channel the deceased victims and Trudy can tap into the mind of the killer. As a psychic detective team, they’re formidable. As lovers, they discover that they’re insatiable.

But if Trudy can see through the killer’s eyes, can the killer see her?

Excerpt:

Trudy drew in a breath and told herself to chill out. Levi sat in the rattan chair to her right, crossed his legs, and flicked a white thread from his black trousers. He was the picture of calmness and she felt as if her chest was full of butterflies.

“Do you two have separate rooms?” Trudy asked, trying to drive past her nervousness and get Quintara’s goat.

Levi smirked and glanced at a cackling Quintara.

“Levi’s too busy seducing all the pretty television anchor women to want to share a room with a well-rounded, older enchantress like me. Isn’t that right, Levi?”

“You’re the one who was announcing your room number to every waiter and barkeep we ran into last night.”

“And a lot of good it did me,” Quintara said, flipping her string of red beads and puckering her lips in a pout. “But let’s talk about murder.” She glanced from him to Trudy. “Have you felt anything, dear? He’s been talking to you, hasn’t he?”

Trudy fidgeted on the sofa. “Yes, a little. I don’t know . . .”

“You do know,” Quintara said, her tone scolding, scalding. “You have felt him?”

“Yes.” The word almost stuck in her throat. She glanced toward Levi and flinched when she saw that he was completely focused on her. Talk about intense! It was like she was being blasted by a laser beam. “He’s thinking of murdering a barmaid that he knows. But I’m not entirely sure—.” She caught the rapier-edged glance Levi and Quintara exchanged. “What?”

“You have the right person, dear.” Quintara nodded to a folded newspaper on the coffee table. “A barkeep was murdered last night. He mutilated her.”

“Oh, no!” Feeling as if she had been socked in the gut, Trudy reached for the newspaper and located the front page article easily. The details were sketchy. No clues. No leads. Used a serrated knife. Mutilation. Worked at the Gold Lagoon on Canal Street. A shiver ran through her and guilt brought hot tears to the back of her eyes. “I should have told you about the vision sooner.”

“And what? We would have cased out every bar in Key West and warned the potential victims?” Quintara shrugged. “We must have more to go on than that, dear. We’ll put our heads together and create a profile of this killer. We’ll get to know him so well that we can predict his movements. Eventually, we’ll be ahead of him and be able to identify him and help catch him.”

Trudy turned toward Levi to find that he was still studying her, one brow slightly arched. “What have you been getting about this guy?” she asked.

He lifted one broad shoulder. “The victims haven’t given me much to go on yet. They didn’t see him coming and were knocked out. The woman before this one – Janie Fullbright was her name – was blindfolded, gagged, and when she came to, her wrists and ankles were tied. She was a heroine addict.” He held out a hand for the newspaper. He wore a silver ring on his middle finger and the square black onyx in it glinted in the sunlight.

When he moved, Trudy caught a whiff of lemony lime. One cool customer, she thought. Everything about him was controlled, calculated almost. But there was an undercurrent of turmoil just below his polished surface. She’d always felt it and that intrigued her about him –more than his psychic abilities or his reputation as a womanizer.
