Second Chances Can Be Lethal

Narcotics Officer, Sean O’Leary is bitter after a messy divorce that has reinforced his solitary nature, leaving him only with his dog and a sword collection. He could never imagine that  his former best friend may be the only woman to bring happiness into his lonely life.

Ellie Gardner knows loss; especially after she was banished from her best friend/crush’s life by his jealous wife. Although the regret of walking away from the love of her life still stung, a chance encounter with Sean may change everything.

When Ellie and Sean reconnect, they could never expect it’d be in such an explosive way, leaving them both to gain the fulfillment of their ‘what if’s.

Finding love is hard enough without the past breathing down their necks, especially when said past has no intention of letting go. When Sean’s ex, Pia Mastriani returns, Ellie must face her nemesis’ relentless tactics to get Sean back, including eliminating Ellie if necessary.

Sean and Ellie’s relationship is put to the test but will they fare well while they go rummaging through The Ex File?

TXF Sean 4Excerpt:

Tempting fate, he cupped her cheek, heartened when she didn’t turn away from him. “I may be a lot of things,” he started, “but I’m not that kind of bastard. That much I can promise.”

“But you didn’t call.” Her voice was small, full of confusion and accusation even as she hooked her fingers through his belt loops.

Sean rested his forehead against hers, feeling the heat of her whiskey breath against his lips. “You said you were going to call me right before you ran out the door the other morning.” He hoped that by showing the parity of their situations, it would make her feel better.

“I didn’t run.” Ellie tilted her head back to look him in the eye, “I walked, with dignity and great haste.” She held a straight face for only a moment before breaking into a quiet chuckle.

He could feel himself grinning like an idiot. He nuzzled his nose against hers. “Fine, you left with great haste.”

She turned her face away and mumbled something that sounded like, “I didn’t know what else to do.”

“Eleanor,” he purred as he placed a finger under chin and turned her face to his. She looked… scared? Ashamed? It was several shades of emotion at once, and he wanted nothing more than to hug her as tight as he could to make them go away. “El. You know what I did last week?” She shook her head. He licked his lips and laughed slightly. “I arrested a couple hookers, did some buys. Hung out with Guinness. Went a little nuts on eBay for a couple antique swords. It’s an exciting life I lead, huh?”

Ellie’s eyes fell from his to his lips, finally landing on his chest. “I’m sorry for doubting you.”

Sean threaded his fingers through her hair as he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “No, don’t apologize. We’re both kinda new at this.” When she looked back up at him, she looked like she was about to cry. That wouldn’t do at all. He brushed his lips across hers, pleased to see the surprise in her eyes. “We’ll work it out.”

She reached up and tucked his bangs behind his ear, her fingertips igniting little sparks against his skin as she trailed them down his neck to his shoulder. “I’m sure we will.” When she arched up into him as she kissed him, he knew the heaven he’d experienced the other night hadn’t been imagined. Her fingers wound in his hair, the way her breath caught when he bit her neck, her leg hooked around his, damn, he hadn’t realized how much he’d missed this.

The knock at the door broke them apart for only a second. She looked at the door, and the clock on the stove, before pulling him tight against her again. “Wrong house. They’ll figure it out.”

That was all the permission to continue he needed, grabbing her by the waist and lifting her onto the counter. Stepping between her legs, he dropped his hand to her knee, moving it slowly up her thigh and dragged her dress with it. Ellie tugged at the collar and sleeves of his button down shirt, until he stopped only long enough to toss it into the living room over the half-wall.

He framed her face in his hands and peppered her lips with tiny kisses and nibbles as she wrapped her legs around his waist and pressed herself as close to him as she could be while still dressed.

The banging on the front door recommenced, this time with the familiar timber of a cop on a mission. “Eleanor Gardner. Open the door now or I’m coming in there.”

FBI Agent Audra Wheeler has been haunted for the last thirteen years by a paranormal attack that left her sister, Kendra, in a coma. Mentored by FBI Assistant Director Jonathan Cordero to investigate crimes committed by specters, Audra believes she is on the trail of a ‘serial killer’ specter with a MO very similar to her sister’s attacker.

The investigation takes her to a small town of Specter, Georgia; a haven for ghosts who exist among the living.

Review:

American Specter is an interesting tale offering a twist to the “ghost story” theme. It’s an eclectic blend of Criminal Minds, Supernatural and Men in Black, and features great characters with a fun supporting cast.

In a nutshell, Audra Wheeler is a special agent trained to hunt “specters” – ghosts who reside among the living. Most are nice and don’t upset their living counterparts but one has developed a rather nasty habit of strangling women. Audra arrives in Specter, Georgia to investigate yet another murder by the ethereal serial killer, only to run into the one man she can’t resist . . . Ethan Cole, now Sheriff of Specter.

The story progresses with the investigation and a few unique elements like the latest victim returning as a specter to help solve her own murder. Since the girl was strangled by an unseen entity, she can’t identify her assailant but she does offer up some other clues.

I have to say, American Specter surprised me by the way it subtly reached out and grabbed my attention . . . and held it. This is a clever, well told story. I didn’t expect such an enjoyable read since I found the Prologue boring, more like the author was reciting facts. If she’d breathed a little more life into those few pages, I could easily rate this with five stars. Telling should never be an option to showing. I only bring this up because someone might not give this book a chance if they judge it on the Prologue.

American Specter is a fun, quirky read for anyone who enjoys crime novels, suspense thrillers, paranormal thrillers and likes their stories sprinkled with romance. You won’t go wrong starting your new year off with a good book . . . like American Specter.

Excerpt:

AUDRA DANCES WITH ETHAN

“So, was it as good as you remembered?”

Yolanda didn’t waste any time getting into the thick of Audra’s personal life once they were seated at the bar in Bishop’s. Audra remembered to turn off her specter shield on the way in. Yolanda had changed into a charming sundress and boots that instantly made her look as if she belonged in the late-night hotspot of Specter.

“No comment,” Audra said as Ashley, the specter waitress, placed a glass of red wine in front of her.

“Long day, Agent Wheeler?” she asked with genuine concern.

“Long summer.”

“I’m so sorry about this ugly business here,” Ashley said. “I hope you’re able to find out who’s responsible.”

“Thanks, Ashley. Me too,” Audra said, and the specter phased out.

Audra shed her usual suit jacket and draped it across her lap before lifting the drink to her lips and taking a sip.

“How is the city?”

“Doing just fine without you,” Yolanda said with a huff. “We don’t need you to call and check-in. So what if my marriage has finally ended in crashing flames and my mother thinks that I’m the worst daughter, like, ever.”

“Finally gave Billy the heave-ho?”

“I gave him the heave. He already had his own hoe.” Yolanda snorted.

“Sorry,” Audra said and perked up as a great song came on. “I have not heard this song in a million years.”

Audra spun around on her barstool as she tried to remember the last time she’d heard it. Her eyes fell to the far corner of the room onto the ancient jukebox that Ethan hovered over. Her breath caught as she remembered lying on the floor of Ethan’s New York apartment, tangled with him in his Egyptian cotton sheets.

“Be careful, your heart’s on your sleeve, Agent Wheeler,” Yolanda commented.

Ethan strode across the floor towards her, the look in his eyes unmistakable, just as a mature specter phased into his path. Audra found the sight somewhat amusing as Ethan couldn’t find a way to politely sidestep her. He finally gave in when dodging her was not an option, and Audra watched as he spun his lighter than air partner around the floor. She watched the way his body moved, enjoying its smooth and nearly fluid gestures.

Before the music stopped, an older gentleman specter tapped Ethan on the shoulder and took over. Audra watched the romantic sparks fly between the ghosts as they lit up the dance floor. Audra eyed Ethan as he walked to the end of the dance floor and motioned for Audra to join him. She took a deep breath and looked at Yolanda.

“Go on. My magic works better when I’m alone anyway,” she said. Audra downed the contents of her wineglass, left her jacket on the stool, and walked over to the current sheriff of Specter. He pulled her into his arms and she felt as if she were floating. Placing her right hand on his left shoulder and her left hand in his right, she rested her head against his chest and allowed herself to get swept up in the moment.

“I found Abigail’s sister,” Ethan said.

Audra looked up. “Where is she?”

Excerpt:

I strained to release my arm from Griffith’s vise-like grip while scanning the surrounding trees, trying to determine which was less of a threat, the beast of a man holding me or those who might be waiting for me in the woods.

“You will come inside, now.” Griffith spoke slowly and deliberately as if I were a small child.

I batted at the hand Griffith placed on my head. “I’m not a puppy, quit petting me.”

“I will protect you.” Griffith’s warm breath caressed my ear. “If for no other reason, to find out what I’m giving up and why she wants you so badly.”

I inhaled his masculine scent, like musky earth. It washed over my face, and the tension in my jaw released. I stopped struggling. “Are you the devil?” My tongue was thick and heavy so the words came out slurred.

“Not even close.” His words soothed and comforted, like having a weighted blanket cocoon me. Each movement was an effort. It wasn’t the same as the thing in the woods. This was more like the feeling after a long massage or bubble bath.

“It’s not safe.” Griffith wrapped his arms around me, and I rested against his broad chest.

“It’s not safe.” I nodded. My muscles relaxed and my eyelids grew heavy.

“It’s cold. We’re going inside.” Griffith kept his arm supporting me as he steered me toward the house.

“We’re going inside.” I parroted and walked up the steps, leaning heavily on him.

Out of the corner of my eye, something was cautiously moving at the edge of the woods. Branches snapped as whatever was observing us crept closer.

About the Author:maureen

Growing up with four siblings had Maureen familiar with escaping into a good book, or the recesses of her mind. She realized later in life everyone didn’t have characters telling stories in their heads, or weren’t envisioning magic and mayhem within the everyday. This, and long walks in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania spawned a love of writing.

Since her desire to become a Solid Gold Dancer was thwarted when the show was discontinued, Maureen opted to pursue other paths. Attempting to conquer new endeavors proved fruitful with her first novella, while other attempts, such as challenging a fear of heights with parasailing, were unsuccessful.

Therefore she’s chased other interests, though none-the-less-daring, but closer to the ground, such as belly-dancing, becoming a self-proclaimed tequila connoisseur, fulfilling her role as biker babe to her alpha hubby and surviving motherhood to twins (so far).

Penning stories boasting laughter, light suspense and something magical in the hope of sharing her love of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary world.

Excerpt

Brody pulled up in front of a two-story gray house in a nice neighborhood with palm trees lining the streets.  Flicking on the interior car light, he checked the address he’d been given.  It was the correct address, so he parked his rental car in the driveway.  There were lights on inside the house, which was encouraging, for he had a critical need to talk to the resident.

Impatiently, he rang the doorbell several times, and then pounded his fist against the front door.  Damn it.  He had not come all the way from Indiana to Florida to miss talking with this guy.  He had to be home.  Brody desperately needed his help before another teenage girl lost her life.  Sheriff Tim Brennan had written to him about how good this guy was, and if Brennan recommended him, he had to be excellent.  Brody hammered at the door again, before peeking through the front window.  There was no one inside, but from his position he could see open sliding glass doors leading to the backyard.

From the side yard, he opened the iron gate to the back of the house.  The second he entered the backyard, he noticed a woman diving into an Olympic-sized pool.  Transfixed, he watched her as she swam to the far end of the pool, and then kicked-off to swim to the other end, this time on her back.  Her naked body, slick from the water, glowed in the moonlight.  The tiny glittering lights surrounding the pool made her look ethereal as she sliced through the water.

He should do the gentlemanly thing and leave, but he couldn’t move.  His frozen legs seemed attached to the ground.  He could barely breathe as she lifted herself out of the water.  With long black hair as shiny as glass, she had an athletic build, with full, uplifted breasts, curved hips and endless legs.  His jeans grew tighter as his arousal strained against the zipper.

Moving to a deck chair, she wrapped a white towel around her body—then picked up a serious-looking handgun that she aimed at his chest.

“I don’t know who you are or why you’re in my yard, but I’ve got a little secret I’d like to share with you,” she began.  “In the past two years, I’ve shot two men.  Neither man is here to talk about it.”

Brody stiffened as a wave of apprehension hit him full-force.  He’d been shot before, remembered it well, and had no desire to repeat the experience.  He cleared his throat and said, “I apologize if I frightened you.  I pounded on the front door, but no one answered.”

“That doesn’t tell me who you are and why you’re here,” she returned, assuming one of the best shooting stances he’d ever seen.

He hesitated for a second, and then responded, “I’m Sheriff Brody Chase from Morel, Indiana, in Shawnee County.  I’m here to see Carl Stone.”

She quirked her eyebrow questioningly, and asked, “Who told you Carl Stone lived here?”

“A fellow Indiana county sheriff gave me the name and address in an email.  Tim Brennan’s his name,” he replied.

She slowly lowered the gun.  “Sounds like Sheriff Brennan made a typo.  It’s Carly Stone that you’re looking for.  Why do you want to talk to me?”

“You’re Tim’s consultant?”  Brody asked, with an element of surprise in his voice.

“My brother, Blake Stone, is a detective on Tim’s team.  Last year, he and his wife, Jennifer, did all the work to track down a serial killer.  I just gave them a kind of psychological road map.”

“I need to talk to you,” Brody said as he moved closer.

She held up a hand.  “Not here.  There’s an IHOP Restaurant down the road.  I’ll meet you there in an hour.”
