Spring Break Must Reads – Day One

It’s Spring Break. A great time to catch a few rays while catching up on some great books.

I’m posting a suggestion for  eBook reads each day during the next week. My choices are NOT from the best sellers list. Everyone knows those titles and authors. Nope, my list comes from the lower ranks.  There are wonderful gems of hidden talent in the digital world if you just dig for them. You may not agree with my selections but I encourage you to give them a try.  We each have expectations of what we want in novel and it’s virtually impossible to satisfy everyone. Trust me . . . as an author, I have first hand knowledge of this phenomena.

So to begin my first day of Spring Break Must Reads, I’m offering a fresh out of the gate debut author. Alexa Bourne has crafted a wonderful, intriguing and thoroughly saucy novella called Her Highland Champion. This author is well-travelled and used her first hand knowledge of Scotland to create a descriptive background that rivals the reader’s fascination with the sexy alpha hero, Malcom Fraser. Ms. Bourne has a talent for building sexual tension in the most simplistic scenarios. I’ve licked my lips so many times, I was forced to purchase a new tube of ChapStick.

Okay, I admit I’m a sucker for amnesia plots. When Heather Winchester washes up on the shores of Loch Finnan, half-frozen and lacking a memory, she’s rescued from more than a bad case of hypothermia. Malcom Fraser, a retired bodyguard with secrets of his own, charges into her life and heart with all the passion and desire of a  Highland laird from history. The connection between the main characters is immediate and intense. Add a dash of suspense in a delightfully twisted sub-plot, another area of expertise in which Ms. Bourne excels, and you’ve got a riveting story that keeps you turning pages to the end.

I finished this quick read with a mixture of satisfaction and disappointment.  Disappointment because I wanted more!  And there is more to come.  Her Highland Champion is the first in a wonderful series developed around these hunks of burnin’ love bodyguards i.e. IPN Honor Guards.

This is a perfect read for a poolside diversion. Once you’ve finished, go take a dip in the cool waters. You’ll need it!

I’ve been off the grid the past couple of weeks finishing my new sexy urban paranormal – The Gatekeeper. This edgy story was so much fun to write. I hope you’ll have as much fun reading it. Here’s the blurb:

Abandoned as an infant, raised among strangers, cursed by mysterious powers she tries to hide, Kylie Baker lives a solitary life – until secrets from the past thrust her headlong into an unfathomable future. She’s the Gatekeeper, guardian to a portal between two worlds, and if a demon Warlord from the other side has his way, all hell’s about to break loose on Earth.

Kylie must locate the one person who can explain what is happening . . . the mother she thought was dead. A shapeshifting warrior and his band of rogue werewolves are determined to keep them apart. The Cool Rides, Hot Nights series
Paranormal novellas with an erotic twist

Kylie Baker knew at an early age she was different. It didn’t deter her from trying to fit it.

By the time she was ten, Kylie had become a chameleon – camouflaging her true nature to blend with whoever was her friend at the moment. During her teens, she did her best to stand out, even to her detriment. As she grew into her twenties, she stopped caring what anyone thought.

In two days, Kylie will celebrate her thirtieth birthday, along with a sizeable fortune from a trust fund.

Her plan: to ride her motorcycle through each of the forty eight continental states in search of a kindred spirit. Someone with unusual “talents” like herself.

Kylie Baker is about to discover a whole lot more.

The road beckons to me.

Wind buffets  my face, rippling the skin on my cheeks like rolling waves against the shoreline. My fingers tighten around the grips on my Harley Davidson as I maneuver a turn in the highway and accelerate when it opens up into a straight line.

The rumbling pipes and road vibration feels good between my legs. Like a man’s hand – stroking, caressing, arousing. Perhaps better.

I love this time of the day. This time of the year. The afternoon sun is warm against my black leather vest and the crisp mountain air is filled with scents of autumn. I briefly wonder if it’s possible to be reincarnated as an inanimate object. If so, I want to come back as a motorcycle. I want the ride to go on and on forever.

I can feel my braid whipping against my back, bound in a tight hair glove. A grin lifts one side of my mouth. I remember the first time I rode my Harley with waist length locks snapping in the wind, thinking it looked sexy. A forced haircut later, I chalked it up to lessons learned.

My grin melts into a grimace. So many things I’ve learned over the years. It’s a wonder I survived.
