Book Description:

The world has long forgotten them, but their descendants live on, not wholly mortal or god, but something in between…

At the dawn of the sixth century, in the aftermath of her mother’s brutal execution, Mara Black is forced to flee the only life she has ever known.

Mara can tell she’s different, but isn’t sure why. After she encounters two mysterious strangers, she discovers her secret is but a drop in an ocean of many. She is a Dia, a descendant of ancient gods, and her mother sacrificed herself to protect Mara from their past.

Summoned by an uncle she didn’t know existed, Mara thinks she’s found the family she’s always wanted, and Corbin, a love she never thought possible. But not everything is as it seems. Her uncle has other motives for protecting her, and her mentor, Malcolm, becomes so jealous, he’ll do anything to get what he wants.

When tragedy strikes, and the true darkness among them comes to light, Mara discovers that sometimes love can give you everything, and obsession can take it all away. With her powers gone, and destiny calling, she has to look deep within to find the courage to save herself. Mara, along with Corbin and her newfound family, must fight to get back what was taken, or die trying.

Excerpt:

The drums echoed off the walls as Corbin and Malcolm made their way through the back gates of Moorthrop. The guards and villagers were gathered near the green, leaving no one to challenge their entry, or seize their swords.

“We’re too late,” Corbin said through clenched teeth.

“I can see that,” Malcolm responded. “How was I supposed to know we wouldn’t make it in time?”

Corbin bit his tongue. Now was not the time to argue with Malcolm. They had a job to do. As they weaved through the rows of huts, an old woman called out to them. She sat near the door of her hovel, her body hunched with age, and a half-woven basket in her lap. “Here for the execution?” she asked.

Malcolm laughed at the woman with a sneer and continued on. Corbin stopped and looked at her with a tilt of his head; the knuckles of her hands were swollen, and appeared painfully stiff. “Will there be an execution today?” he asked.

She nodded and pointed to the square. “I never saw in all my life such evil as this. Killin’ folks fer nothin’.” She gave a disapproving shake of her head and began to fumble with the basket.

Corbin walked up to her and dropped a coin in her lap. When she glanced down at it, he took hold of both her hands. She gasped as the blue light from his fingertips covered her skin, but in less than a moment he stepped back, and the light vanished. Blinking in amazement, she examined her hands, her fingers spread out like wings, healed from the stiffness that crippled them. She moved her fingers up and down, and then met Corbin’s gaze and asked, “What magic is this?”

Corbin smiled. “I don’t know what you mean.”

Before the old woman could respond, he continued towards the green.

He met up with Malcolm as he approached the edge of the crowd. Malcolm used his energy to move the onlookers aside. The crowd of people wouldn’t know why they moved or even look at the two men moving past them. The power of the veil was a gift to their kind, to protect them from discerning mortal eyes. Most mortals wouldn’t have noticed Corbin much anyway. He looked almost human. But anyone could see that Malcolm, with his white hair and fierce gray eyes, was different, unnatural.

The man in the long black robe bellowed out to the crowd. “By order of King Gerren of the realm of Dumnonia, we are not to tolerate evil among us.” He pointed his finger at the accused woman on the platform. Corbin used his keen sight to examine her. She looked wretched, defeated, and certainly not one of their kind. Could Rowan have been mistaken?

Corbin turned to Malcolm. “Are they charging her with witchcraft?”

Malcolm nodded with a smirk. “It appears that way. Fools. They waste their time looking for witches. They have no idea what walks amongst them.”

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Faeries and “Black Moon”

Oh, my lovely readers . . . I have such a delectable treat for you today! Author Jessica McQuay is blogging about Faeries and her new release, “Black Moon”. And to make your day a little sweeter, she’s also hosting a scrumptious giveaway. I’m talking SWAG~! Be sure to read to the very end for contest details and more information about “Black Moon”.

Faeries and Black Moon
by Jessica McQuay

Hello everyone! First I’d like to take a moment to thank Deb for hosting me today! It’s an honor to be here posting with your followers. =)

Growing up, I was a huge fan of fairies. I had mad Tinkerbell love going on. LOL! I watched every movie she made an appearance in, read every book I could get my hands on with her in it and I collected tons of little porcelain and glass Tink figurines. I couldn’t get enough of the magical creatures with wings. I was obsessed with the ability to fly and the fairy attachment to nature.

As I grew, my love waned, but only slightly. It started to morph into something else. Of course I learned along the way that fairies weren’t real. But I was still captivated by the idea of magic…but not just any magic, fairy magic. Then I discovered the world of books out there about fey! I shed my Tinkerbell loving days for the magical world of the Faery.

Black Moon is about a girl that believes she’s ordinary. But within a few pages of the story she finds out that she is anything but. She is then thrust into a magical, foreign world where the things she grew up believing were fairytales are actually based on reality. She gets to experience not only the life of a Fae, but the life of Fae royalty. The land of Varulean, (the Faery dimension), is run by the Queen and the King, but the Queen is the one with the power. The line of Fae women are the ones that take over the throne when the time comes. And the magical abilities of the Fae on Varulean range from simple nature related spells to being able to read the minds of others.

My love for Faeries ties into the magical feeling you have as a child. You know the one I’m talking about, right? Where you believe anything is possible and magic is real and Santa really DOES bring you presents every Christmas Eve! Despite being forced to grow up, that sense of magic has never left me. Yep, you read that right. I still believe in magic. I just hope that I can pass that same sense of something magical on to my own children. =D

Thank you again to Deb! I truly appreciate you allowing me to stop by and talk about my love of Fae with your readers!

Happy Reading everyone!

What is a Slopjar, you ask? A soulful book of poetry by Ingrid Jennings.  Read on for some samplings:

NIGHTMARES

Too many nightmares live in my mind,

too many nightmares leave me in a bind,

too many nightmares surround my soul,

they leave me in fear,

when no one is near.

Too many nightmares,

oh, why are you here?

Leave me in peace

so I may sleep.

And here I go

down to dream.

Sleep be sweet and lay me in rest.

THE DREAM

It has already been determined how much I burned my candle because of a

haunting in a dream.

A dream so extreme,

it felt so supreme,

call it blasphemy,

because this dream made me scream.

A dream where I dreamt of cedar and oak romancing my figure

and caressing my body under a starry sky.

A sky so intensifying,

it bewildered my mind.

Under the starry sky

I didn’t feel any lack,

any lack of love,

for I knew it was all there.

And in this dream the woods

capture my soul.

The cedar and oak entangle me so.

Why do they do so,

seduce me each night?

They entangle me in their bewildering webs.

I just float through the night

in the midst of the shadows.

I dance with the branches,

I play with the leaves

until the dawn begins to rise.

And just as it rises,

it sets just as well,

and when it does my friends and I

begin to dance.

In a trance

we move about.

The glowing moon watches from above.

We twirl and we run.

We enjoy the sounds of a sleepless night.

Why do these woods entangle me so,

wrapping me in their bewildering webs?

When the fall comes they shelter my body

from cold frost bites, and as the winter tiptoes in

I run about,

there’s no doubt.

Trotting on the leaves,

scouting through the forest.

Pecan, cedar, oak, or maple,

I love my trees.

They are my friends,

they entice me

to the end.

Angels vs. Demons Blog Hop

Angels and demons and giveaways . . . oh, my! The Angels vs. Demons Blog Hop is underway. You have until July 1st to visit the blogs and enter to win exciting prizes including a Kindle Touch!!! Details below.

Who loves  a bad boy . . . er, demon? I do!!! Demons can personify all sorts of delicious traits from very, very good to very, very bad. Don’t get me wrong. Angels are great. But demons . . .  well, they’re too tempting to resist.

When writing The GATEKEEPER, I created my evil Tagusian warlord to resemble a demon by giving him red facial markings and fiery eyes, the defining traits of the warlord clan. The description blended well with my heroine’s assumption he was a demon from the bowels of Hell.

Developing a demon goes beyond physical appearance. As with any villain, they must be multi-faceted to really get under the reader’s skin. Evil incarnate usually didn’t start that way and  Orellius from The GATEKEEPER is no exception. He has deep rooted psychological reasons for wanting to cross the portal and conquer Earth. It’s not just a power quest. And since he didn’t die at the end of book one, you’ll have to read book two (The WARRIOR) in the Clans of Tagus series to find out what happens. It should be available mid summer.

The GATEKEEPER, Rated 4 stars by Romantic Times, is available at Amazon. Nook readers….stay tuned. It’s coming to Barnes and Noble. Click the link on the cover photo in the sidebar to read more about this exciting tale. Hope you like your urban fantasy HOT because this one has a heat level of 5.

And now to the exciting part of the blog hop… CONTEST and PRIZES!!!!  ONE winner gets a Kindle Touch & ONE winner gets a $60 Amazon or Barnes&Noble Gift Card.  How cool is that???  All you have to do is comment below and be sure to INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. Just to make things interesting, anyone who comments on my blog will also receive a $10 dollar Amazon or B&N gift card. You’ll still be entered in the grand prize giveaway.
