Book Description:

When Lacy Telchev buries her husband, she finds herself in treacherous waters. Igor, much older than Lacy, had secrets. Suddenly, Lacy is being chased across Europe by men who believe she can lead them to those secrets.

Evading her pursuers with the aid of a chance acquaintance, the handsome and mysterious Max Petersen, Lacy travels across Germany, Austria and Hungary, to a shattering discovery in Budapest. Along the way, she meets three women from Igor’s past.

As Igor’s story unfolds through them, Lacy is less and less certain who her husband really was. Who can Lacy trust? Will she survive to find out?

REVIEW:

Romantic Road has something to please everyone, beginning with top notch writing. Blair McDowell has penned another riveting tale chock full of danger, suspense, romance and mystery. I’m quite sure the book grew tentacles and wrapped around me because I found it impossible to look up until I’d turned the final page. I confess, I was a willing prisoner.

The fast paced plot takes readers on a superb journey, beginning in New York and extending through several European countries. It’s obvious the author is well traveled because of her attention to detail. Rather than use a heavy hand with descriptive prose, however, Ms. McDowell delicately layers enticing tidbits of local flavor that blend seamlessly into the story.

I loved the heroine’s character arc. Her growth and development were expertly crafted, making Lacy Telchev believable but more importantly, likable.

Romantic Road is a story with twists and turns, several subplots, and a great unraveling of the mystery behind Lacy’s husband. Add it to your reading list, then READ it! This novel is too good to remain unopened.

Excerpt:

“Where is it? Just tell us where it is and you won’t get hurt.” The taller man loomed over her, his face expressionless, a mask.

“Where is what? What are you talking about? Who are you?” Lacy began to be annoyed. That was better than being scared. “Can I see your badges again?”

The second man stared hard at her though dead-looking flat grey eyes. “Mrs. Telchev,” he said, his voice low and menacing, “we mean you no harm. But you must tell us where he hid his manuscript.”

They knew her name? Icy tentacles of fear slipped down Lacy’s back. She shook her head. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

At that moment the red and white lights of a state police vehicle rounded the curve coming toward them. Seeing the blocked road it stopped. Two uniformed officers got out and approached the two parked cars.

“You’re blocking the road. What’s the trouble here?”

The taller man spoke.  “No trouble, Officer. Sorry about the way we’re parked. I’ll move the car immediately. The lady was pulled over here and we just stopped to see if she needed help.”

He flipped open his wallet and showed the officers the same ID he’d shown Lacy.

It seemed to mean something to the policemen.

Lacy opened her mouth to say something and then thought better of it. What could she tell the police? These men wanted a manuscript from her but she didn’t know where it was? Or what it was about? Or even if it existed. That it involved her dead husband? No. She wouldn’t say anything. Not until she knew more.

Excerpt:

“What did the x-ray find?” she asked.

“A spiral fracture of the right arm.” He paused for a moment and took a deep breath as if trying to control his emotions. “I’ve seen this kind of injury before. A fracture like this can be the result of a fall, but it can also be an indication of child abuse. An arm as small as Ava’s will break like a twig if it’s twisted hard enough. I’m obligated to contact the authorities if I suspect abuse.”

Julia stared at him in mute shock, her brain struggling to process his words, as if trying to translate some unintelligible language. The words child abuse rang in her ears. Finally she found her voice.

“You think someone deliberately hurt her?”

“Her injuries are consistent with abuse.”

“I don’t give a damn what they’re consistent with. Ava has not been mistreated. My mother said she fell down the stairs, and if that’s what she said, then that’s what happened.”

“I believe there’s more to the story than a simple fall.”

“If it comes down to believing you or believing my mother, I’m going with my mother.”

“Perhaps you don’t know your mother as well as you think you do.”

Julia sucked in a breath and stared into Dr. Campbell’s dark, accusing eyes. The idea that her mother would hurt Ava was ridiculous. She adored Ava, would do anything for her…

She blinked and looked away, remembering an incident the other day. She’d heard her yelling at Ava about the milk she’d spilled on the kitchen floor, making such a huge deal of it that Ava had cried. It had struck her as strange, since she couldn’t remember her mother yelling at anyone, ever. She wasn’t as patient as she used to be. And how did she explain her strange phone call telling her Ava had been hurt? Of course she’d been upset, but her mother had been nearly incoherent with distress. Was something going on she wasn’t aware of? She was seventy-one now. Maybe looking after a rambunctious five-year-old was too much for her.

No. She shook her head to reject the disloyal thought. Dr. Campbell was the one who was wrong.

“I know my mother. She didn’t do this. It was an accident.”

“We’ll soon find out. Sharon is questioning Ava now.”

Julia stared at the door. “She’ll be scared, all by herself.”

“Sharon’s very good at what she does. She has a way of making kids feel comfortable.”

Julia turned on him, the anger and despair she’d been holding inside spilling out. “And you? Do you enjoy upsetting five-year-olds and turning families’ lives upside down? Does it make you feel powerful to sic the authorities on us?”

“Look, Mrs. Stewart, I take no pleasure in bringing in the authorities. But I’ve seen child abuse, up close and personal, and I can tell you it’s damn ugly. The things parents and caregivers are capable of doing to defenseless children…”

He stopped abruptly, his chest heaving. Closing his eyes, he averted his face and took a deep breath. When he turned back to her, his steely control was back in place. “So yeah, if I have even the smallest suspicion that a child has been abused, I’m going to ask questions. And I’m not going to apologize for it.”

About the Author:Jana

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel.

Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish.

Review:

If you’re in the mood for a steamy Romantic Suspense that keeps your interest with clever plot twists, emotional angst, and believable characters, then be prepared to obsess over “Obsession” by Sharon Buchbinder. Seriously, this is one of those books you just can’t put down. Okay, sometimes I’m guilty of judging a book by its cover and I fell into that trap with “Obsession”. The bad boy model made my heart go pitter pat a few times before I finally turned to the first page. After that, he came to life in the form of sexy alpha male, Alejandro, a high ranking official in a drug cartel. I love saying his name . . .  Alejandrrrrooooo . . . . Ahhh, it stays on my tongue like a dab of rich chocolate, teasing, taunting my taste buds. Sigh. I digress.

Alejandro is the perfect foil for strong minded Angie, our heroine suffering a mother’s worse nightmare. Her child has been kidnapped by his grandparents and taken to a Mexican mountain hideaway belonging to a religious cult. Angie’s father, a delusional self proclaimed prophet, believes the infant is the “Chosen One”.

Now this is where the story line gets heavy. Poor Angie survived a horrible childhood at the hands of her parents but not before trying to escape the memories with drugs and alcohol. She’s sobered up and turned her life around only to find her parents are back for round two, this time using her small son. To think her baby has been carted away by this drugged up, incestual couple is almost more than she can bear.

Alejandro steps in to help and things start to sizzle. Angie believes he is part of the drug cartel and fights against the attraction, not realizing he is actually an undercover federal agent who is focused on not blowing his cover. Angie’s tale will keep you on the edge of your seat.

It’s a great read for  Romantic Suspense fans, Thriller fans or just those of us who love a spicy romance. Read it! You’ll be glad you did! Rated 5 stars.

Excerpt:

“You’re not like any of the drug dealers I’ve ever met before. What’s a nice guy like you doing in a place like this,” Angie waved her hand at the villa, “with goats?”

He pulled the key out of the ignition, turned, raised his sunglasses, and winked.

Her breath caught in her throat, and her stomach tensed—but not from giggles. Handsome, charming, breath taking. And a drug lord. She was not falling for a drug dealer. No. Way. Not again.

As if reading her thoughts, he gave her a long, sexy smile that went all the way up to piercing azure eyes. Pinned by the intensity of his scrutiny, her boneless arms refused to move. Almost otherworldly in color and intensity, his bright blue gaze and slow non-verbal assessment reminded her of someone she’d met long ago. Who? Where? The man had to be the devil incarnate. Maybe the goats were his.

He reached over and placed his hand on her shoulder with care. The gentle touch and warmth of this chivalrous man’s hand on her shoulder warred with the hard, cold knowledge that he worked for one of the biggest cartel bosses in Mexico. Alejandro tipped his head toward the mansion and spoke in a low rasp.

“Here, at this house, no one is what they seem. Remember that. It could save your life.”

Alejandro climbed out of the VW bug and glanced at the woman through the windshield. Dammit. Of all the drug cartels in all of Mexico, why did this gal have to come to Isabel’s? And why did she have to be so damn—winsome? Under that kick ass exterior, the woman had a childlike quality and sweetness that reached into his chest and squeezed his tough heart. He shifted his gaze to the munching goat. He had to stop thinking about her that way. She was a momentary bump in an otherwise smooth operation. There was no room for romance in his life. His weekly visits with the lovely Natasha satisfied his needs. What more could an undercover agent want?

He shook his head. It was the damn mother card. Hooked. Again. First the sex-trafficked Natasha, who really did have a daughter being held hostage by an organized crime ring in Moldova, now Angie, who had a baby being held hostage by an organized religious cult. Since when did criminals and cults become organized? Had they all gone to business schools for MBAs? What was the world coming to?

He sneaked a glance at Angie. Why, oh why, did she have to be a redhead, too? Her long copper colored hair was the erotic equivalent of waving a red cape in front of a horny bull. Add the gorgeous breasts that he tried to pretend he didn’t see in the craptastic jail, her battered but still beautiful patrician face, and her warped sense of humor—and he was ready to slit his jugular. As if feeling the heat of his gaze through the glass, she looked up and gave him a teary, lopsided grin with perfect teeth. His heart lurched. He pressed his eyeballs to crush an image of grabbing her and pulling her into her into a passionate kiss on her full red lips. If he didn’t stop, he’d have a hard time explaining his hard-on.

After I graduated with a BA in Psychology and no job, I realized my dreams of working in the attic writing great prose would have to take a back seat to the simple pleasures of eating, drinking, and having a roof over my head.

Fast forward a few decades, and I had a career path that would make all but the kindest say, “What were you thinking?” After working in health care delivery for years, I became a researcher, then an academic. I had it all– a terrific, supportive husband, an amazing son, and a wonderful job. But that itch to write (some call it obsession), kept beckoning me to “come on back” to writing fiction. REVIEW: To Tame A Montana Heart

ToTameAMontanHeart_5913_300I like cowboys. They exude old fashioned values and a code of honor that is quickly fading in today’s high tech world. Cowboys reign at the heart of romance. They’re awesome alpha males. Just the sight of a cute butt in tight wranglers, a pair of scruffy boots peeking from beneath a duster, or a Stetson pulled low over a weathered face makes my heart race. And if a cowboy should tip his hat and say, “Howdy, ma’am” . . . well, you’ll have to pick me up off the floor because I’ll be in full swoon.

So when given the chance to review an old fashioned western romance, complete with a cowboy hero and a feisty heroine, how could I say no?

“To Tame A Montana Heart” by Dawn Luedecke unfolds slowly, like a gentle stream meandering across the heartland – until it reaches the foothills where it quickly takes on speed and transforms into a rolling, rollicking mass of white water filled with excitement and a hint of danger. Hang on, because it’s a wild ride.

I loved Travis Simms, the multi-faceted hero who has come to Montana to build a hotel and nurse a broken heart. His efforts to act the gentleman around Dusty Jean Larson backfire when the high-spirited cowgirl scoffs at his polite ways. She’d much rather be busting broncs or fishing in the nearest river. Travis has never met a woman like Dusty. Even though it’s obvious she can take care of herself, he still appoints himself as a guardian to the wild, beautiful blonde.

Their sparring is fueled by the dubious outcome of a horse race where Dusty insists she won Travis’ stallion, Ghost. And so begins a series of sneaky attempts to steal his horse – only to be stolen back by Travis. They eventually call a truce but the competitive angst between the two is always apparent.

The story is filled with one adventure after another from chasing outlaws to confronting Native Americans from the nearby reservation to being duped by Travis’ twin brother and his conniving wife. Ms. Luedecke kept the flavor of the old west throughout the book, and did a wonderful job building a cast of colorful supporting characters. It has a little spice but not so much that you’d be embarrassed to have your older teen or mother reading the same book.

If you love historical westerns blended with a sweet romance, you’ll enjoy “To Tame A Montana Heart”.

Book Description:

Running from a past of privilege, deceit, and danger, Travis Simms is ready to settle down. What better place to forget all he left behind than the quiet little Montana town of Lolo Hot Springs? His goal is clear — build a hotel and his own destiny without complications —until one of the town’s most troublesome women captures his attention.

Dusty Larson is hell bent on independence, helping her sister run the Triple D Ranch. She can do anything a man can, and do it better, so she certainly doesn’t need one in her life. The only problem is she seems to attract bad luck and danger…and Travis. Can he tame her wild ways and keep his bachelor status intact — or does he risk losing his heart?

Excerpt:

She watched him with care. “I don’t know if I love you. I like you, a lot, but I don’t have the slightest idea what love feels like.”

Travis’ smile grew slowly across his face. “I understand. I’m not sure if I love you or not, but I also don’t think I could live without you. So you will always have that.” His voice was almost a whisper when he said the last.

“Truly?” Her voice cracked and she had to force herself to breathe easy.

“Truly.”

She inclined her head and took two brisk steps toward him. She leaned over and kissed him with all the fever of a thousand fires. He reached up and intertwined his hand through her hair to hold her still as he plundered her mouth.

She released him with a shaky breath and jumped back to turn on her heels. “Put something nice on. I’ll be back with a preacher man.”

“You know, I heard you only have to say ‘I marry you’ three times and then you’re hitched.”

She threw him a sassy look and slammed the door shut.
