MEET DEBRA S. SANDERS
BESTSELLING AUTHOR
& NATURE-LOVING FREE SPIRIT
I’m an Amazon Bestselling author with a German translation under my belt who loves connecting with wonderful readers from around the globe (even if I can’t understand their sweet comments!). I’m at a good place in my life where I can give back to my industry. I do that by serving on the board of directors for Grand Canyon Writers – a chapter of Sisters in Crime, co-chairing the Mysteries & More Marketing Network, and contributing a quarterly column to Penwheels, a newsletter supporting traveling writers.
But behind the bestseller tag and group affiliations, I’m just a quirky, nature-loving gal who craves grass between her toes and stargazing on a dark night.
Writing may be my passion but I’m no prim and proper author. I’m the crazy tree-hugger who loves camping wild in her tent or kicking up dust on a remote trail before returning home to a supportive husband who greets me with a hug and a glass of wine. I have always been an adventurous soul, chasing after myth, lore, and things that go bump in the night.
My life journey has been wonderfully messy and imperfect. I was a single mom who put her kids first even when it meant untangling myself from an unkind marriage. We made it through some difficult times, came out better on the other side, and learned laughter and forgiveness along the way. Life blessed me with chaos and that, my friend, is fodder for interesting tales and unusual characters. During my single years, I once dated a man who came dangerously close to stealing my heart but he eventually severed our relationship. The reason? “Things happen to you that don’t happen to anyone else . . . and you think it’s normal!” I still laugh about that to this day.
Have I perfected the craft of writing, discovered how to lead a charmed life, or learned to age gracefully? Not even close! But I strive to improve with every book, embrace unexpected (and planned) adventures when they occur, and avoid looking closely in mirrors at deepening wrinkles and saggy jowls. I’ve adopted an attitude of gratitude because each day I am awarded the extreme pleasure of crafting tales and eating popcorn.
I’m no literary giant – just a regular gal who aspires to tickle your imagination with my creative endeavors. Maybe we can share this journey together? The fact that you’re still reading means we’re destined to be friends. So let’s chat over chilled wine or warm cocoa and I’ll tell you a campfire story about a haunted house in Indiana. Or the Arkansas Bigfoot. The ghost horses of Palo Duro Canyon and the curse of the Blue Angel in Iowa. Or we can just chill in the flickering firelight and enjoy the hoot owls. Bring your own tent and bedroll – and don’t even think about waking me up before seven.
